Why use an extension instead of the website
With the add-on installed, you convert from the YouTube page you are already on: no copying the link, no switching tabs and no waiting behind anyone else. The audio is fetched and turned into an MP3 inside your own browser, then handed to your downloads like any other file.
The website still does more. It handles MP4 video up to 1080p, WAV, trimming, playlists and six other platforms, and it works in every browser. The add-on does one job, YouTube to MP3, and keeps that job on your machine.
The browser handles the install and the updates, and there is no account, no sign-in and no settings page to work through. The first time you convert something, tick the box confirming you may process that media; the add-on will not start without it.
It converts audio, not video
This is a YouTube MP3 downloader extension, and that is all it is. There is no MP4 option in it, because the whole point of the add-on is doing one job inside your browser without sending anything to a server. If you want video, use the downloader on this site for MP4 up to 1080p, or the Windows app if you download often and would rather it all ran on your own PC.
Shorts work too
Open a Short, click the icon, and the audio comes back as an MP3 the same way it does for a normal video. A Short is usually 15 to 60 seconds, so the file is small even at the highest bitrate. For the video itself rather than the sound, the Shorts downloader on the site saves the MP4.
Which bitrate to choose
For music you want to keep, 320kbps is the safe pick, and on everyday earbuds 256 or 192kbps is often hard to tell apart from it. For podcasts, lectures and interviews, 128kbps keeps voices clear at well under half the size of 320kbps. Whatever you choose, an MP3 can only carry what YouTube streams, which is usually around 128 to 160kbps of audio.
The Chrome extension, and what it does
There is now a YTMP3X extension in the Chrome Web Store, and the same build installs in Brave and Opera as well. It converts a video you are watching into an MP3, M4A, Opus or WAV file, and it covers TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Dailymotion. The conversion runs on our servers rather than inside your browser, so it works on a slow machine, and it is limited to five conversions a day. The converter on this website stays free and unlimited.
The Firefox and Edge add-ons above work differently: they convert inside your own browser with a packaged copy of FFmpeg. Whichever browser you use, the converter on this website needs nothing installed and also covers MP4, WAV, trimming and playlists, and the Windows app runs everything on your own PC. There is no Safari version, and on a Mac the website works in Safari with nothing to install.
